The Cadet Core of the South Plainfield Rescue Squad is comprised of volunteers between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age. The cadets were established many years ago to recruit young individuals with the motivation to volunteer. Since that time, there have been hundreds of cadets that have volunteered with the South Plainfield Rescue Squad and made a difference. For most of them, it is a difference that will affect the rest of their lives.
Being a cadet on this rescue squad is a great deal of responsibility, but it can also be a great deal of fun. From the day you join, you are able to "ride" in the back of the ambulance as an observer. In the next weeks and months of joining, you will learn the ambulance inside and out as well as recieve your certification in CPR with the chance to become certified in many other classes.
There are some important things to remember when you begin thinking about joining the South Plainfield Rescue Squad as a cadet. For one, you will see things that most other people won't see in a lifetime. It is an exciting experience, but at the same time it can be nerve racking and mentally traumatic. You will see the worst of car accidents, many different types of injuries, fires, and even death. But it must be remembered that our sole purpose is to prevent death and serious injury from these accidents and illnesses. We are the people that are called upon when it matters most, and soon after you begin, you will learn use that as your driving force to continue volunteering. EMS personnel often get overlooked as the hero's, but in reality, we are just as much a hero as any one else. You will realize this the first time a life is saved and that person comes back to you weeks or months later with a simple word... "Thank you". You will also be able to participate in many special functions such as the Labor day festivities, football games, wrestling matches, and any other functions that requires the rescue squad to stand by.
